When If I cast Shillelagh on my quarterstaff and have Polearm Master feat, does the bonus attack deal d4 or d8?Ĭrawford The bonus attack would use a d4. This interaction was clarified by 5e designer and " official rules expert" Jeremy Crawford on 23 August 2014 in the following tweet exchange. However, while the Attack action uses a d8 for damage per the Shillelagh spell, the bonus attack uses a d4 damage die per the Polearm Master feat.

The bonus attack is a melee attack, so you would be allowed to use your casting ability for the attack and damage rolls of the bonus attack (and the Attack action). The weapon’s damage die for this attack is a d4, and it deals bludgeoning damage. This attack uses the same ability modifier as the primary attack. When you take the Attack action and attack with only a quarterstaff, you can use a bonus action to make a melee attack with the opposite end of the weapon. The Polearm Master feat, in relevant part: It is not limited to only the Attack action. 275)Īs written, the spell applies to all melee attacks with the affected weapon. The attack and damage rolls of melee attacks using that weapon, and the weapon's damage die becomes a d8. They get a ranged cantrip by default, designed around close range and deal additional damage with weapon attack (which Shillelagh is and Savagery isn't).The Shillelagh spell description, in relevant part:įor the duration, you can use your spellcasting ability instead of Strength for I think the best usage of Shillelagh is spore druid. On lvls 1-3 average magic stick bonk is 7.5 damage vs 5.5 from Savagery, but on lvl 5 Savagery's average is 11 and stick's is 8.5 (assuming you increased WIS on lvl 4). On the other hand druids also have Primal Savagery which deals 1d10 and scales up, has a decent damage type and desn't require sticks to use. The problem is, it doesn't scale like other cantrips. Without any extra attacks it's just 1d8+WIS mod, which is up to 5. Finally, it's not even that good as a melee cantrip (if you aren't building around it). And it doesn't work on some items a druid might wanna use, like Moon Sickle. You will also have to spend both action and a bonus acion on your first turn to both cast and bonk, which is small but unnecessary restriction. Secondly, druids start with only 2 cantrips and Guidance is a very strong contender for one of your cantrip slots.
#DRUID SHILLELAGH FREE#
Of course you are free to pick spells and cantrips you like, but if you want mechanics, Shillelagh is not great.įirstly, it's a melee cantrip and druids as a spellcasters usually don't want to be in melee range. I am a rare druid player that would advice against that spell.
